Why the Java version matters
Minecraft server jars are compiled for specific Java generations. Running them with an older runtime can produce class-version errors, while mod loaders and server providers may have their own compatibility requirements.
Do not guess from the Minecraft launcher
The Java runtime bundled with a Minecraft client installation does not automatically mean your standalone server process is using the same Java executable. On Windows, multiple Java versions can exist side by side and the command or application starting the server determines which one is used.
How to choose correctly
- 1Identify the exact Minecraft server version.
- 2Identify the server provider or mod loader.
- 3Check that project's current Java requirement.
- 4Install a compatible 64-bit Java runtime.
- 5Confirm the server process actually launches with that runtime.
Common symptoms of a Java mismatch
- UnsupportedClassVersionError or class file version messages.
- The server window closes immediately after launch.
- A loader refuses to start because the Java version is unsupported.
- A startup script resolves a different java.exe than expected.
Server managers and Java
A server manager can reduce the amount of manual Java-path handling, but the compatibility requirement still comes from the Minecraft/server software you are actually running. Treat the provider's supported Java version as authoritative.
